This mother has escaped domestic violence but now faces the challenge of rebuilding a home for herself and her two children. Life is not easy on a very tight budget and the accommodation she has been provided with is only partly furnished. She has been fortunate to receive help with some items but is badly in need of a washing machine to reduce the expense of launderettes and maintain hygiene for the family. Please could you help?
The client is a single mother living with her son in council accommodation. She works but her hours vary, and she is in receipt of Universal Credit. Her son suffers with a skin condition which is getting worse and has been very distressing for him, especially when it is hot. He needs a new mattress as his is old and uncomfortable and he struggles to sleep well. It would help to improve his wellbeing if he was able to get this.
We met this client through Lewisham Foodbank. She told us she had run out of food and hadn’t had hot meals for some time, as she does not have any means of cooking food. An electric cooker would be so beneficial to her, as she would be able to heat the tinned items she receives through Foodbank and cook other meals for herself now and again. She is on a very low income and does not have any savings to buy a cooker. She is struggling to find work due to mental health issues and would really appreciate any support in buying a cooker.
C is a single parent with twin boys aged 14. After years of batting with substance misuse she is now really committed to addressing her addiction and successfully participating in a detox programme. While she is looking forward to a better future for her family, she is currently unemployed and worried that she can’t afford to replace her children’s old mattresses. The boys are embarking on their GCSE year and a restful sleep will make a huge difference to them. Can you please help this family?
